• Several Dolphins players privately have voiced displeasure about the team cutting linebackers Karlos Dansby and Kevin Bur-nett, but coach Joe Philbin on Friday explained the overhaul and decision to add faster linebackers in Dannell Ellerbe, Philip Wheeler and Jelani Jenkins.

“This is a passing league,” Phil-bin said. And Miami wants “to have linebackers with that ability to do more than just play the run, and be multidimensional. Play man, zone, blitz effectively.

“The more skills you have as an athlete, the better you’ll be.”

• The Dolphins have $10 million in salary-cap space and will have another $10 million after June 1, but need about $8 million of that to sign draft picks. Miami can carry space to next year, when it likely will need to address offensive tackle and re-sign Reshad Jones, Paul Soliai and/or Randy Starks, among other moves.

Why it will be imperative to trade one of starks or soliai for picks. Relieve cap space early to start the resigning process early.

Namely Jones, possibly Grimes, and some others as the season progresses. $14 mill tied up to the DT position is way to much. Not including Odrick, as of now.

Let me be sure I understand this, a team that had lots of cap space now has almost none? If that is right it is a management problem.

Doesn't that say $10 now and $10 more June 1? That's still a lot of money. Of course that will go down some now that Clabo signed

$20 million dollars is bad? Less $8 for rookies equals $12 million. That is bad?

Didn't say I understood it but so now they have 12 million cap space which in today's market is one good player. They lost Bush,Long and several other high paid guys. The WR was a nice pick-up but not that nice, sorry looks like the same old 6-10,7-9 crap to me.but hey I am sure Ireland's rebuild next year again will be something to see.

And if you consider patterson and Marshall having the ability to be restructured it could add another $5 million give or take.

Dolphins third-round CB Will Davis "stood out" in Friday's rookie minicamp practice.
The Dolphins traded up for Davis and expect him to compete for a starting job as a rookie. With Dimitri Patterson and Richard Marshall not guaranteed roster spots, both Davis and No. 54 overall pick Jamar Taylor should see extensive playing time. Davis is undersized and may be best suited for nickel duties.

That is usually the way it works after you sign about 15 players, not including like 9 more from the draft.

Also, you have a minimum cap number to spend which is about 89% of the total cap. Meaning they hqve to spend all that money

Here, enjoy

From what has been posted here we are supposed to have tons of cap space again after 2014 so it seems like we did a damn fine job?

Bizz, when you consider we could take $8 million as a rollover include the $14 million from free agents like soliai and starks. Add the other one year contracts up and yes we are more than fine for next year.

You know that's a damn good point, I guess based on his history I just think Ireland has fucked this up somewhere. I hope I am wrong but not really feeling good about the guys lack of success in the past.

Richie Incognito - G - Dolphins
The Palm Beach Post thinks Dolphins LG Richie Incognito "might" have to compete with third-round rookie G/T Dallas Thomas for the left guard job.
Incognito, 30 in July, has started 47-of-48 games since joining the Dolphins, and he has just one year left on his deal. Pro Football Focus graded Incognito out as its No. 14 left guard in 2012. The Dolphins can save $4.3 million against the cap by releasing him. Thomas is a natural fit for Miami's zone-blocking scheme.

Richard Marshall - DB - Dolphins
Richard Marshall will battle rookie Jamar Taylor for the starting corner job opposite Brent Grimes.
Marshall's roster spot won't be safe if he loses out to Taylor. He's coming off back surgery and is owed $4.55 million in base salary. However, the Dolphins may be forced to keep Marshall if Grimes can't return to form right away. He tore his Achilles' tendon in Week 1 last season.

See, I don't understand why Marshall is in trouble... Patterson is owed a synonymous amount of money and I think he has less talent than Marshall... Marshall isn't great or good by any means, but he is way more serviceable than Patterson, and he has a dead cap hit significantly larger than Dmitri.

Yeah I would much rather keep Marshall over Patterson. He's younger, slightly cheaper and has a better track record.
